Imagine turning down a deal that could be worth billions today. That is what basketball player Spencer Haywood may have missed when he lost his chance to own part of Nike. 💰
In 1973, Haywood was a rising basketball star, scoring around 29 points per game for the Seattle SuperSonics. Nike founder Phil Knight asked him to wear the company's shoes.
Nike could not offer him as much cash as other brands, so Knight reportedly offered him 10% of the company instead.
Haywood was young and did not fully understand the value of owning a business. He trusted a friend to handle the deal while he focused on basketball.
But his friend believed Nike would fail. He eventually sold Haywood's shares and gave him $100,000 in cash.
Today, 10% of Nike could be worth billions, depending on the original deal and later ownership changes.
Haywood says he is still friends with the man who sold his shares. His story shows how a quick payout can mean missing out on a much bigger opportunity
